Florida Model Legislature Senate President
Senate President: Abdoulaye Ba
Abdoulaye Ba is a Hillsborough Community College student who was born and raised in Dakar, Senegal before moving to the United States a few years ago. After two semesters in the English as a Second Language program(E.S.L.) at Uniondale High School in New York, his teachers encouraged him to move on to enroll in the college-level Advanced Placement courses. He took that path and enrolled in the U.S. History and Government class which he truly enjoyed, and thus sparked his interest in politics and history. He later graduated from a Florida high school and enrolled at HCC on a pre-medical track. Abdoulaye had another passion for science and the human body: he wanted to become a surgeon. As a college freshman, he immediately made it a priority to be involved on campus and thus joined numerous clubs while also fruitfully campaigning to become a Senator. In Student Government, Abdoulaye was later appointed as Chair of the Government Relations committee in which he led a team of delegates to the state capitol to advocate for student issues to our legislators. Later, inspired by the people he met and the goals the team accomplished, Abdoulaye successfully ran for Student Body President for his campus and from then on started working to improve the student life at HCC. He, with his small team, recruited many members and promoted various campus events. He also led another delegation to lobby on key student issues in Washington D.C. while also participating in press conferences with public servants such as U.S. Congresswoman Kathy Castor.
At his second Florida Model legislature conference in October 2015, Abdoulaye and his team worked hard to earn an Outstanding Delegation Award as well as other individual ones. With his experience as Minority Whip, Committee Chair and Senate Majority Leader, he was later recruited to be part of the National Model Congress conference staff in Washington D.C. by serving as Clerk of the House of Representatives. Toward the end of the school year, Abdoulaye realized his knack for leadership, social change and advocacy surpassed his passion for medicine. This is why he is contemplating pursuing studies in International Relations and Economics to create global bridges between his home continent Africa and other places around the globe with aspirations to work with the United Nations. Abdoulaye currently resides in Tampa, Florida, and he hopes he will return to Senegal and instill a positive social and economic change , while working towards self-sufficiency and fighting for universal access to education.
In his free time, Abdoulaye enjoys playing soccer, longboarding, biking, reading and listening to Hip Hop music.
