Senate President: Khalil Quinan
Khalil Quinan is a junior at the University of Florida, after having spent two years at Santa Fe College where he participated in several activities including Student Government and FJCCSGA. Khalil has served successfully as a Senator and as Senate President Pro Tempore in the Santa Fe Student Government. Key legislation that Khalil championed included the Santa Fe Transportation Access bill, which allowed students at Santa Fe to ride Gainesville’s public transportation for free like University of Florida students. After countless times going to the capitol to lobby on behalf of the bill, it finally became law May 27th.
Khalil participated in the Florida Model Legislature for the first time in 2011 where he chaired the Agriculture, Environment and Natural Resources Committee. Khalil was an active speaker on the Senate floor and went on to win the Outstanding Senator Award. Khalil is honored to serve the State of Florida as the Senate President for the 2012 Florida Model Legislature and will do anything to help the Senators with their legislative agendas. | Role of the PresidentEmail: senatepresident@modellegislature.org
At Florida Model Legislature the President promotes a "platform" of interest that are communicated to legislators. He/She is the leader of the Senate. The President will influence the calendar of bills in collaboration with the House of Representatives. The President may schedule and hold several press conferences with the Press Corps. He/she also gives speeches at the Sine Die Ceremony and an optional speech at Closing Session. The President will also assist in writing bills for the conference and assisting with the organizational session.
