Florida Model Legislature Senate

Senate Platform

Tallahassee, Fl. — The Florida Senate Leadership looks forward to an expedient and productive meet between not only their chamber, but the Joint efforts of both the Senate and House of Representatives. Senate President Joseph Torres and Secretary Kay MacDonald plan on a successful upcoming legislative session and promise to best represent their constituents in Florida’s Capital with emphasis on the following issues listed below:

Fiscal Reform:
Balance Florida’s current budget
Lower taxes and fees for residents in the state of Florida
Reduce state government spending

Economics:
Creating more job opportunities for Floridians.
Supporting economic development opportunities

Education and Environment:
Funding and promoting the clean-up of our rivers, lakes, estuaries, and beaches.
Supporting our higher education system and fostering more competitive 2- and 4-year institutions.
Upholding constitutional principles

Juvenile Justice and Social Reforms:
Finding common ground on medical marijuana
Passing preventative legislation against opiate and controlled substance abuse
Revising open and concealed-carry gun laws
Tackling voter fraud via stricter voter registration requirements

This list includes some pressing issues the Senate will face in Tallahassee, but is not representative of the entire session. Any questions or concerns regarding the Senate’s current platforms or additional topics you wish to be addressed in this session should be directed towards the Senate Leadership by way of the listed contact information. 

While this is not an exhaustive list, the Senate looks forward to working with all Senators and Representatives. Feel free to contact your Senate Leadership with any questions.

Becoming a Senator

At Florida Model Legislature, you can become a Senator of the Upper Chamber of the Florida Legislature. Serving in this position, you will need to prepare extensively. This includes learning about the Real Florida House of Representatives and how it works with the Real Florida Senate. In addition to this, you must pay particular attention to the Difference between the Real Legislature, and the Model Legislature. Some rules will be different, and you may learn about them on our Preparation Page. 

In your preparation, you will also need to learn about Florida's system for submitting Bills, and passing them through Committee's. And you will need to learn about Florida Model Legislatures Bills and Committees System.
