If you were to ask state legislators what the job of the legislature is, they might say "Our job is to pass laws," or "We have to represent the people". ("Politics In States and Communities", 1997). Both of these are true but generally legislatures fulfill five primary responsibilities:
- Enact Laws
- Consider Constitutional Amendments & Gubernatorial Appointments
- Approve Budgets
- Serve Constituents
- Oversee State Agencies
