What is Model Legislature?

Picture
What is a Model Legislature?
"Model Legislature is a simulation of a State Legislature, participants will write, debate, and vote on legislation while representing the people of their legislative districts."

What is a State Legislature?
"A legislature is a type of deliberative assembly with the power to pass, amend and repeal laws." (Hansard Society. November 2003)

If you were to ask state legislators what the job of the legislature is, they might say "Our job is to pass laws," or "We have to represent the people". ("Politics In States and Communities", 1997). Both of these are true but generally legislatures fulfill five primary responsibilities:
  1. Enact Laws
  2. Consider Constitutional Amendments & Gubernatorial Appointments
  3. Approve Budgets
  4. Serve Constituents
  5. Oversee State Agencies
