Legislature Leadership


House Leadership

Speaker of the House
The Speaker is a constitutional officer who leads the House for a two-year term, manages its operations, and presides over its sessions. The Speaker is elected by fellow Representatives. Among the most important duties are the appointment of committee members and selection of their Chairs. Chairs are key figures in the legislative process and play an important role in determining content of legislation considered by the House.

Speaker pro tempore
The Speaker pro tempore is also elected by fellow Representatives. In the event of an interim vacancy through death, resignation, or disability, the Speaker pro tempore may exercise the authority of the Speaker. The Speaker pro tempore often presides in the Chamber when the Speaker leaves the Chair.

Majority Office Leadership
Majority Leader-Represents Republicans on the House floor.
Majority Whip-Assists leadership in managing party's legislative program. The leader is expected to actively articulate his or her party's viewpoint on the House floor during sessions.

Minority Office Leadership
Minority Leader- Represents Democrats on the House floor.
Minority Whip- Assist leadership in managing party's legislative program. The leader is expected to actively articulate his or her party's viewpoint on the House floor during sessions.

Senate Leadership

President of the Senate
The Senate President is the constitutional officer who leads the Florida Senate for a two-year term. The President, who is elected by members of the Senate, manages the operations of the Senate and presides over its sessions. The President's many duties include: selecting a Majority Leader, appointing Senators to standing Senate committees, appointing committee chairs, and appointing citizens to a variety of boards and commissions.

Majority Office and Leader
Works as a political extension of the Office of the Senate President. The Majority leader works to enable the Majority Caucus to fully participate in the governmental process; providing accurate information and services in a professional manner, enabling members to make unified, informed decision affecting the quality of lives of the people they represent. The Majority Leader represents the members of the Majority Party in the Senate.

Senate President Pro Tempore
A member of the majority party and may occasionally preside over the session in the absence of the President. The duties of the pro tempore are prescribed by the Senate Rules of the Senate President.

Minority Leader
The Minority Leader serves as the spokesperson for the Minority Party of the Senate. The minority party is defined as the major political party having the fewest seats in the house (Senate).
