House Speaker: Jonathan Marr
Jonathan Marr, first inspired by politics with the election of President Obama, has climbed the ladder of local politics with student council, community service and outreach. He is a sophomore at Florida Atlantic University getting his degree in both Political Science and Biology, Jonathan, passionate about the political process, plans to pursue legal protection for wildlife and ecological sanctuaries whether it be through governmental action or public avocation. Raised in Port St. Lucie, Marr has been at the forefront of political issues within FAU's Student Government and continues his efforts of environmental sanctity by working for eco-friendly 4Ocean.
This past year, Jonathan had the honor of serving as Florida Atlantic University's Boca Raton Secretary of the House of Representatives remaining as outspoken and encouraging in the capacity that he served. He advocated for the extension of the Bright Futures Scholarship into the summer on behalf of all State Universities with Florida State Senators and Representatives. Jonathan remains in the FAU Boca Raton House and plans to promote campus revitalization, experience enhancing events and student civic engagement.
Last year he served as Representative Dave Kerner of Florida's 87th District fighting on behalf of Democratic opposition sponsoring bills on topics of education, law enforcement, and equal pay. As Democratic Ranking Member of the House, he expressed consistency on the House Floor and remained one of the most outspoken individuals within the conference. During his tenure as Rep. Kerner he ran for Governor and lost to a slight majority. Accepting that a "loss is just another win at experience" he is honored and privileged to serve as the next Speaker of the House Of Representatives.
The skills and the training that the Florida Model Legislature instills opened a major window into how the legislative process works. Leaving here you feel more confident about working in public office.
Role of the Speaker
Role of the Speaker at Florida Model Legislature:
At Florida Model Legislature the Speaker promotes a "platform" of interest that are communicated to legislators. He/She is the leader of the House of Representatives. The Speaker will influence the calendar of bills in collaboration with the Senate. The Speaker may schedule and hold several press conferences. The Speaker also gives speeches at the Sine Die Ceremony and an optional speech at Closing Session. The Speaker also will assist in writing bills for the conference and assisting with the organizational session.
The Speaker may also assist in promoting the event and work with the Executive Team on other conference planning.
