Florida Model Legislature House Clerk
House Clerk: Jon Rader
Jon Rader is a graduate from Florida State College at Jacksonville with an A.A. in Political Science and he is currently pursing his bachelor's degree at the University of North Florida and serving as the House Clerk.
In April 2012 at Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ): Open Campus/Deerwood Center, he campaigned and was elected Senator of the Student Government Association (SGA). From August 2012 to May 2014, he served as SGA President. While working as the SGA President, Jon served on the Student Fees Committee and the Student Appeals Committee; he was also one of the student leaders who pushed for the College-wide tobacco and smoking ban that went into effect in March 2013.
In April 2013, he was elected as the District Four Coordinator for the Florida College System Student Government Association (FCSSGA). In January 2014, as a member of the FCSSGA Executive Board, Jon spoke with U.S. Senators and Representatives in Washington D.C. on issues related to student loans and Pell grants. In addition, he also advocated student issues on a state level in Tallahassee. While in Tallahassee over Spring Break, he addressed Governor Rick Scott and his cabinet about the need to maintain affordable tuition as well as the importance of granting in-state tuition for veterans living in Florida.
After transferring, Jon served at the University of North Florida's Student Government as the Sergeant-At-Arms in the Senate and as an Associate Justice on the Supreme Court.
Jon has had several opportunities to serve and participate at various conferences with Florida Model Legislature, Florida Model United Nations, and National Model U.S. Congress. Jon hopes that more students will be aware of how the political process works and to be civically engaged in their communities after participating with Florida Model Legislature. He plans to spend the rest of his life as a missionary overseas.
Role of the Clerk
Role of the Clerk at Florida Model Legislature:
In Florida Model Legislatures House of Representatives, the Clerk will serve at the leisure of the Speaker. The Clerk typically reads the bills and other necessary readings as condoned by the rules of the procedures. The Clerk will write bills as part of the conference participation, however the actual Clerk of the Florida House of Representatives leads a non partisan office. In conference, the clerk also assist with updating the bill citator for the house bills.
