Welcome by Mr. Doug Ryan Executive Director of Model Legislature![]() 2010 Group in the Florida Senate
Welcome to the website of the Model Legislature Program. Here you will find a multitude of information ranging from our conferences, to state government information. Surely you must be asking yourself, “What is Model Legislature?” and my response is simple; Model Legislature is a simulation of Government by College, University, and Graduate students led by their peers and young professionals. We are a non partisan organization which promotes civic education through participation.
At Model Legislature, students take on the role of a Representative, Senator, Lobbyist, or Press Corps Member at an annual conference. Most students who attend our conferences are associated with student organizations such as Student Government, Phi Theta Kappa, or Model United Nations, College Republicans and Democrats Clubs, and newly established "Model Legislature" clubs. We ensure the best possible simulation of our government by enlisting directors of each field in our program; executive and legislative branch, and lobbyist and press corps. These directors are young professionals, some upper institution undergraduate students, graduate students, lawyers, and people working constantly at the capitol. The Directors oversee the Volunteer Staff to ensure the best possible simulation of the Government. The Board of Directors started Model Legislature as a program on the belief that college students needed more hands on extracurricular activities showing them how government works. Currently, our Model Legislature program is focused in Florida, where we will hold our third conference in the first week of June. Our goal is to educate college and university students on the process and works of government as our mission statement provides. Keeping in line with our mission, we provide information on how to participate in our simulation of government as well as State Government Information. Our simulations don't stray from how the actual government works, as you will find that much of the preparation material for our conference is developed from government resources for the public. We currently provide information on Florida’s Government in order to educate any visitor to our website or participant in our conference on how a government functions with a non partisan viewpoint. We have amended some government rules which require time restrains due to the time constraints of our conference. In keeping with our non partisan view, all information for state government is provided from a “.gov” address, with screening by our Program Director to ensure that no political party or their ideals are supported. I hope that as you go through the pages on this website, you consider suggesting a new location for Model Legislature on our “Contact Us” page. I also hope that you consider Sharing this webpage with College and University Administrators, Student Groups Advisors and Leaders, and any student interested in government. Please enjoy our website, learn a bit about government, and please feel free to Contact Me about any questions or comments. I thank you for your time, and again, welcome to the website!
